Ready to make changes in 2022? I don’t know about you but I love the idea of choosing a Word of the Year vs. New Year’s Resolution because it helps bring out intentions for the years instead of crossing another goal off your list. Your word is a guide you become a better version of yourself and inspire your daily actions.

It can be challenging to pick a word that you want to encompass your 2022. I like to think of it as what I want the theme of my year to be. No worries though because it’s not too late (it’s never too late) and I’m here to help you along the way!

In this blog post, I’m sharing the 5 steps I’ve learned to ensure you select the right word of the year for you. I’ll be covering:

  • Assess your life balance
  • Reflecting on your past year
  • What are you thankful for & Gratitude Journals
  • How to visualize your goals
  • Pick word of the year + 75 Words to pick from

Assess your life balance

life balance assessment for word of the year

The first part of setting new goals for the new year is to identify what areas you want to work on. I love using this PDF called “Assessing Your Life Balance” to do this very important step. I like that it helps and see what areas I’m doing really well in and helps me see what areas I need to work on.

Reflecting on your past year

Now that you see how your wheel is balancing, reflect on this past year and ask yourself some personal questions. Jot down whatever pops into your head without self-editing. Feel free to use this free Reflections Summary as a guide or get out your journal and answer the following questions.

  • What advice would you give yourself at the beginning of the year ?
  • What were the biggest three lessons you learned this year?
  • Are you happy with how you spent your time this past year? What steps could you take to improve it?
  • Name three things you can improve upon this year
  • What could I use less of in my life?
  • What characteristics would I like to have?
  • How do I want to feel?

What are you thankful for + Gratitude Journals

how to pick your word of the year

Take a moment and think about all that is good in your life. Little or small. Express deep gratitude for everything you already have, and for everything that is coming to you. Give thanks for the things you want as if you already have them. This is helpful in understanding what you are doing well or what is going well in your life. Do not let these areas falter as you work towards your new goals or intentions. How can you keep this space in prime condition?

With that being said…

Why are gratitude journals good?

While regular journaling has been proven to improve your well-being, making a point of jotting down all the things that you are grateful for can take the experience to a whole new level. It increases positivity, improves self-esteem, helps you sleep better, and can even help reduce stress. Who wouldn’t want to take 5 minutes a day and write down what they’re grateful for? My favorite gratitude journal is the 6-minute diary.

If you want to create awesome habits in the new year a gratitude journal is a place to start. Find a gratitude journal that speaks to you and keep it in plain sight every day. Journal before bed or as soon as you wake up and notice how much more positive you will feel throughout your days. Browse through some journals here.

How to visualize your goals

People around the world have been using various kinds of visualization techniques, meditations, and prayers for centuries. However, visualization often gets a bad reputation as being something mystical or woo-woo that isn’t grounded in reality. Take 5 minutes and visualize your ideal life. Run through your ideal day in your mind from start to finish. Feel what you will feel when that is your everyday reality. Think of your strongest desires and visualize having each thing. Feel what it will feel like when you receive it. Feel what life will feel like having it.

Pick a word of the year

Now that you have all this clarity surrounding your space, it is time to find a word that will theme your year! Has anything come to mind during this process? Are you almost there and it is on the tip of your tongue? Don’t be afraid to utilize Thesaurus.com for assistance. But if you are really struggling, download this list of 75 words to choose from.

There you have it. You’ve just selected your word of the year. Most people do this at the end of the beginning of a year however, I think you can always take some time to reflect and pick a new world. Life is full of change so be able to adapt if your focus shifts.

What is your word of the year? Let’s talk about it in the comments below.
