My holiday cards have really evolved over the years. Finding funny unique Christmas card ideas can be very challenging, so I have really had to think out of the box for mine. I like being the Christmas card that people pull out and think “now that’s clever.” It all started with the Christmas card for the boss babe living on her own to the holiday card for the couple that just isn’t there yet.
You know, I feel a lot of pressure to come up with a unique holiday card idea every year. I enjoy doing it but I always like to think about how I can top last year’s design. Well, this year I think I’ve met my match.
I would like to disclose if you did not receive one, it was not intentional. These were a bit pricer so the budget will be a conversation for next year’s design. Or, I blame it on the Post Office and it is probably still in the mail 😉
Finding a unique Christmas card idea
Once again, my annual Google search commenced. “Christma cards for couples, not married, quirky, funny, etc.” The description goes on and on. Inspiration struck when I was in the craft store at Michaels and saw a bunch of really cute pine air fresheners. I thought about how clever the industry was getting. BAM! Christmas card inspiration hit me.
Earlier this year I bought my boyfriend a quirky anniversary gift. It was a custom car air freshener. I customized it with a picture of my face, and, if you’ve been following me for any amount of time, you know I picked the worst looking photo (but secretly both of our favorite photo). We laughed about it for days, and it still makes us chuckle.
So, thus, I thought about putting a picture of us on a car air freshener, make it pine scented, and have that be our christmas card. All of our recipients can hang us on their tree.
This was a bit pricier than sending your average holiday card, and we realize that but we were only going to send these out to immediate family. I’m sure my sorority sisters across the nation whom I haven’t spoken too in a few years doesn’t need an ornament of my face.
Designing Your Own Christmas Card
I use Canva for literally everything that I do. I recently upgraded to the pro version and it’s been SO worth it. All of the images and tools are spectacular when I’m not feeling super creative. I digress.
I created my text image in Canva using one of the preset templates. We wanted to make it obvious that this was supposed to be a pine tree air freshener, so we enlisted all the help we could get. Of course, keeping in the Christmas spirit, we did it to the tune of a lovely carol. Let’s see if you can guess it…
Oh, Christmas tree,
Oh, Christmas tree,
Hang us in your branches
O Tannenbaum– Ernst Anschütz
I added my own text and then uploaded that to Instafreshener website. We bought 24 and got a pretty good discount for buying them in bulk. Thanks to Honey, we were able to save even more! Seriously if you’re not using Honey, you’re missing out on free savings. It searches coupons for you so you don’t have to!
Mailing Out Holiday Cards
We bought a regular generic box of Christmas cards, which, yes, that’s kind of boring, but the magic was inside the card. This was a little trickier this year because of the thickness. I wasn’t sure if we were going to need multiple stamps or oif jsut one would suffice.
One stamp seemed to work as none were sent back but some post offices can be finicky about this. As soon as they started arriving to family members we got multiple text messages of people saying how cute and clever this concept was. Apparently, we made it very easy for them to understand what our vision was for the card. 10 points for strong communication skills!
There you have it, friends. That was the Christmas card idea for the 2020 year. Did you send about any fun holiday cards? Or receive any? Let’s chat in the comments below!
