Traveling to Antigua and Barbuda is what everyone needs to feel refreshed and relaxed. These are small islands in the West Indies, but don’t let that fool you as there are plenty of things to do and the views are some of the best I have ever seen.
It has taken me so long to sit down and do this but Rob called me out last night saying I was hoarding all of the photos 😅. He’s not wrong. We usually use my phone for photos. Sometimes post-vacation is busier than pre-vacation, but ere we are now. I want to share the photos of our trip to Antigua
It took an arm and a leg and an extra day to get to travel to Antigua, but that is another story for another time.
Here is our experience on the lovely island of Antigua and I hope you can use this as your guide when you plan your trip there.
Accommodations
We stayed in two resorts during our time here due to a flight complication but it was all well worth it.
While in Antigua, a majority of our time was spent at CocobayResort and then we moved on to Nonsuch Bay Escape Resort. Both are an all-inclusive luxury resort that are total honeymoon spots. Or great for a pair of jet setters like Rob and me.
Cocobay Resort
Cocobay was so cute and quaint because all guests had their own cottage. There are not a lot of high hotels in Antigua. Everything is more dispersed throughout the land.
I had been following Cocobay Resort on Instagram for about a year now. That’s how I found them otherwise I would have never even know Antigua existed. Every single view they ever posted measured up completely! #NoFilter
Our first night there our air conditioning remote wasn’t working, and in 70% humidity, that’s kind of a necessity. We ended up moving out of our first cottage to be placed in a second cottage, with an upgraded view of course.
Sadly, this was only for one night :(. We had to go back to our standard cottage. I had asked about upgrading but they were full for the week. So already, my advice, spring for the ocean view! However, they did throw in a private beach dinner. More on that later ;).
Escape Nonsuch Bay Resort
This was the final resort that we only stayed in for one night. A completely different scenery here. Cocobay was all resorts and views, whereas Nonsuch Bay was more quiet, reserved, with no beaches. Very much a hotel you stay in to get away from your daily routine but just hang in your room. I mean each room had its own private pool so we didn’t mind.
My favorite thing about this resort, and what seems to be a common concept with the hotels on the island, is their do not disturb program. They put a conch shell on every cottage with a mini shell attached to it. When you are in the cottage you drop the shell in the conch, when you leave your cottage and you want your room serviced, you keep the shell out of the conch. It became a very cute thing when we left and entered our room.
Activities
There are plenty of activities to do in Antigua. Unfortunately, due to covid, a lot of them were unavailable. This wasn’t a bad thing though. Being resort bound was actually pretty great. Here are some of the things we did while staying in Antigua.
We learned how to Sail
Have you ever heard of a Hobie sailboat? Neither had we until traveling to Antigua. It is a small sailing catamaran. Maybe 4 people could be on this boat tops, but it’s perfect for two! It was one of the water sports that Cocobay offered in its all-inclusive package. The water sports guide taught us everything and then sent us on our way. That was so much fun! We’re even considering getting our own for the lake here haha. Of course, the views won’t be the same.
We Discovered a Private Beach
This is more so due to Covid restrictions. A lot of the resorts and restaurants were closed leaving these magnificent beautiful beaches untouched! Just a short beach walk away was a completely different set of sand, water, and views, and it was all ours.
We Snorkeled
Our beach was located by two coral reefs full of underwater life! Rob bought us some snorkel gear that held up really well. Surprisingly, the beaches are pretty shallow in Antigua for there to be such big reefs near the property. Coral bits were all over. Poor Rob stepped on some sort of sea urchin too and STILL has two holes in the bottom of his foot. Ouch! That’s why I always wear water shoes. I don’t care how dorky they look. The fish weren’t super colorful, and the reef was very gray in color but it was still cool to see all of the underwater life.
Floating Tapas
The Instagrammer in me was SCREAMING with this floating brunch and floating tapas experience. This was an additional add-on of $100 but we booked the best time (5:00p perfect sunset time), got a private pool, a bottle of champagne, and FLOATING FOOD! This was definitely one of a kind experience. I think the pictures say it all.
Outdoor Buggy Adventure
This was the only activity we did off the property. The weather always looks like it’ll be grim in Antigua but the night before this excursion it poured rain. It poured all night and it poured hard. However, that ended up working to our advantage because the track was nice and muddy for our Antigua buggy excursion. They took us on the backroads of the city, through rainforest type scenery, nearby pastures, and even onto another beach!
We got extra muddy because the water was fresh on the dirt. I honestly might have to throw away my sneakers because they will never be the same, ha ha.
Private Beach Dinner
This was not scheduled but due to our air conditioning fiasco, they threw this in for us. I’m telling you, the food in Antigua was ahhh-mazing already and this just spoiled our tastebuds to their limits. Rob has never had a better tasting lobster and I have never had a better tasting salmon. Holy hell I can still taste it. The staff was so wonderful too. Very light, playful, and open to sharing a good time with us!
Sunset Cruise
On our very last night, when we traveled to our other resort Escape at Nonsuch Bay, we booked a sunset cruise, which ended up being a private sunset cruise since they had a lower occupancy rate for the night. SCORE! Our captain was so nice and knowledgeable telling us all about the island, the people, and Nonsuch Bay history. It was a two-hour cruise of just views and Rob. This was a $120 additional cost but once again so worth it. 2 hours on the boat in the ocean just checking out the sites. It was a great final night.
Obviously one of the main activities we did when we traveled to Antigua was lounge and boy did we lounge. We woke up, went to the pool, went to the beach, ate some lunch, took a nap, did it all over again before dinner. It really is a place you can go to just slow your roll a bit.
