Switching to a Silicone Scrubber from a Loofah

I admit I am a loofah sponge connoisseur until I was noticing how extremely sensitive my skin was becoming. This was strange because, sensitive skin and I have always been a team, but its never visibly been a problem until about 2018 which I blame all on my loofah(s). It’s okay though, I’ve moved on. One Amazon purchase later and now I’m more of a silicone scrubber gal and there’s no way I’m going back.

From the end of 2017 to the beginning of 2018 all of a sudden, I started getting random rash breakouts on my body. They were on my wrists, then my arms, and the back of my knees. I had always had very nice skin. Glowing even. So this was a real table turner for me.

This is probably what really jump-started my ingredient junkie lifestyle. Once I started switching products, I began to notice which ingredients were or were not in my shower regimen. Even beyond that, I went to the doctor to see what he said.

That’s when I found out I had a slight thyroid imbalance. The first thing to go when your thyroid is out of whack is your hair and skin in most cases. Well, BINGO. After going to the doctor I was hopeful that getting my thyroid in balance would be the cure to all of my problems. It helped, however, it wasn’t my saving grace.

My saving grace ended up being what I call the body scrubbing revolution.

Loofah Instructions

Most loofahs dont have a long life span. Even if you get the really bougie tpyes witht eh sponge pieces in them. I’ve spent $13 on a loofah one time jsut to see if my irritations were stemming from cheap loofah buys.

Previously hearing that loofahs can hold onto bacteria longer than most household items, I would replace my loofah every month, sometimes even every two weeks. Realy, how much bacteria are we talking here in the matter of a months.

Holy crap you would be surprised. Everything your loofah scrubs off you is not washed away with the soap. A good microscopic chunk of it now lives on that loofah. Ew.

Switching up my products

I found this brand of soap that I significantly saw a difference in my skin with. Mommas Home skincare is a brand I’ve been using for a few years now and have never been happier with my soap choices. All of her ingredients are naturally based and there is no ingredient I can’t pronounce.

I dropped the fragranced Bath and Body Works and switched over full time to Mommas home skincare. I knew I was on the right track with this brand and fell in love with her cinnamon shave bar which was an excellent alternative to a loofah. It did a lot of the exfoliating I previously received from my loofah without the bacteria build-up.

Bar soap alone didn’t cut it

After finding this out, I immediately switched to bar soap and a washcloth that I would throw in the laundry after my shower. This was especially funny because when I found out my boyfriend was only using bar soap I seriously gave him a “bless your heart,” look like he hasn’t seen loofah luxury until he met me. No. He just knew that loofahs housed a crap ton of bacteria and kicked that bucket s a child.

However, this didn’t help my skin either. It was very dry and I felt like I was dragging my skin a lot while I was washing with a washcloth and we all know that’s a big no-no in wrinkle preventative maintenance.

Finding my holy grail – The Silicone Scrubber

I resorted to an Instagram question box on this whole mess of a concept. Something that would wash and exfoliate my body but also not hold a lot of bacteria had to exist. I knew someone out there had the answer. I received a few DMs on the matter and but one particularly caught my eye.

Have you ever heard of a silicone scrubber?

There are a few different versions but essentially it is a silicone dish scrubber that you use on your body. The scrubber is made with soft silicone bristles that work to exfoliate the skin and ecause the bristles are made of non-porous material, they hold on to way less bacteria than a loofah would. Plus, they actually do lather up the same way a loofah would.

Silicone scrubbers drain easily if you tilt them to the side after you rinse them out. I particularly like that the whole brush is a single piece of silicone. This way there are not any concerns with water getting trapped somewhere that will mold or mildew.

Now my skin has seen its best days in the past three years. I can’t even believe with one simple product switch my body went from drab to fab. No more rashes on my arms, no more random red bumps. No more washing my body with month old bacterias either!

Ready to add this baby to your shower caddy? The silicone scrubber is available on Amazon for just $5.99.
