Revolutionizing Your Closet: Why Assessing the Sustainability of Your Clothes is Key

Hey there, fellow millennials! It’s time to talk about something that’s super important, but often overlooked: the sustainability of our outfits. We all love a good outfit, but have you ever thought about how it affects the environment? It’s time to start assessing our outfits‘ sustainability and making more conscious choices.

So, why is it important to asses the sustainability of your clothes for a greener wardrobe? Well, for starters, the fashion industry is one of the largest polluters in the world. Yup, you read that right. Fast fashion creates a ton of waste and has a huge carbon footprint. By assessing the sustainability of our outfits, we can help reduce our impact on the environment.

But it’s not just about the planet – it’s also about our wallets. Sustainable clothing tends to be higher quality and lasts longer, which means you can save money in the long run. Plus, by supporting ethical and sustainable fashion brands, we can feel good about where our money is going.

So, how can we assess the sustainability of our outfits? Here are some tips:

  1. Materials matter: Look for clothing made from sustainable materials like organic cotton, hemp, and Tencel. These materials are biodegradable and better for the environment. Avoid synthetic materials like polyester and nylon, which take hundreds of years to decompose.
  2. Production matters too: Choose clothing from brands that prioritize sustainable production methods, like using renewable energy and reducing water usage. Greenwashing is all too common. So, by looking at how an item is produced, this will mean less waste and less harm to the planet.
  3. Quality over quantity: Invest in high-quality pieces that are made to last. Avoid fast fashion and cheaply made clothing that falls apart after just a few wears. You’ll save money in the long run and reduce your impact on the environment.
  4. Ethics are key: Choose brands that prioritize fair labor practices and pay their workers a living wage. Supporting ethical brands is not only good for the planet, but also for the people who make our clothes.
  5. Location, location, location: Consider the carbon footprint of your clothing’s transportation. Buying locally made clothing can significantly reduce the environmental impact of transportation.

Since I frequently post about my outfits on my instagram, I took it upon myself to make my own outfit assessment sustainability rubric. Any time I post an OOTD, I also give it a score out of ten for its sustainability.

outfit assessment

Assessing the sustainability of our outfits may seem overwhelming at first, but it’s a small but important step in the right direction. By making more conscious choices about what we wear, we can help reduce our impact on the planet and support ethical and sustainable fashion brands. Let’s make a difference, one outfit at a time!
