Some of us are perfectly happy to blend in with the crowd and draw little to no attention to ourselves when it comes to clothing, but if you’ve been following this blog for any amount of time, you know that’s just not me. Some of us like a little attention. We want to express ourselves in the way we dress and stand out from the crowd. When you want to change your style it can be a bit overwhelming on where to start.
If you’re looking to spice up your wardrobe choices, here are a few things you can do…
Add a pop of color to your basics
One of the easiest ways to change your style and stand out from the crowd a bit more than usual is to simply jazz up your basics. Most of us have a lot of black, white, and gray clothing in our wardrobes, which is fine and practical. These pieces can easily be made to stand out more by adding a pop of color. Try out a bright pink scarf, some stripy yellow socks, or a big chunky blue bracelet. Pops of color will elevate your basics above the basics worn by others.
Add color around your face
I have two words: statement jewelry. One way that you can really draw more attention is to use color in or near your face. This could mean, wearing a big visible pair of yellow earrings, sporting chunky gold necklaces, or even buying something like an opal nose ring. Finding a store with more choices will make shopping more of a personal event for yourself. Basically, anything that is colorful near your face will not only draw attention in and of itself, but it will also draw attention to your face, which will only make you more memorable to the people you meet.
Modify your clothing
These days, most of us buy our clothes from the same stores as everyone else. I’ve found so much joy in renting my clothes from Nuuly. It is a fashion rental service. They provide all of the bold pieces from beautiful brands, without me having to fully commit to keeping them in my closet. Another way is to alter your clothing so that it has something unique about it. This could be anything from adding a lace collar to a plain sweater to sewing a patchwork panel into your jeans. There are loads of tutorials online that will help you to pick up the basics, which should allow you to, at least make some subtle changes to your clothing.
Don’t be afraid of patterns
You don’t have to wear a whacky outfit to change your style; it is possible to wear a perfectly standard outfit, just with one piece that’s very bold. For example, you could wear a plain black sweater with black shoes and stockings, but instead of pairing it with a pencil skirt, you could wear a mid-length magenta skirt, or you could wear a basic nude shift dress but pair it with a boldly patterned kimono which will draw the eye. Making a statement means choosing a piece that is unexpected, and this is one of the easiest ways to do that.
Do something different with your makeup
Maybe clothes aren’t the statement you are after and you’re more comfortable with makeup. Whether you choose a redder lipstick than you usually would, go big and bold with the eyelashes, or choose a vibrant shade of green eyeshadow, anything that you can do with your makeup and beauty regime that most other people are not doing will make you an instant fashion icon. However, you shouldn’t just throw anything and everything at your face – you could end up looking like a clown – choose colors and shades that actually suit you.
Forget about trends
Trends are fine, but they change fast, and because they are trendy, pretty much everyone is going to be wearing them. Instead, start building a wardrobe of high-quality pieces that you love. Make sure some of them are timeless classics like blazers and cocktail dresses so that they will always look good. However, be sure to add in various unique, unusual, and stand-out pieces too, then mix and match them to create your own unique style.
Even with all of this, the best accessory anyone can wear is confidence. The people who stand out most are the people who hold their heads high and walk with purpose.
Using your style to stand out from the crowd is a great way to make yourself more memorable whether you want to promote your business or build a reputation for your art, or just want to be a bit different, so what are you waiting for?
